The University of Massachusetts Lowell Applied Research Corporation (UMLARC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit spun out of the UMass System to bring greater agility and optionality to emerging technology development and applied research. Designed to complement the academic and research strengths of the University, UMLARC serves the broader needs of the Commonwealth and our national security landscape.
As the designated Partnership Intermediary under formal agreements with both Hanscom Air Force Base and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, UMLARC is built to accelerate the identification, maturation, and transition of innovative technologies that bolster national defense while enabling dual-use applications across the commercial sector.
Located just one mile from Hanscom in Lincoln, Massachusetts, our Northstar Campus operates as both a strategic beachhead into the Department of Defense and a collaborative lighthouse for Greater Boston’s robust innovation ecosystem. Through a flexible membership model—supporting both resident and non-resident participants—we offer a dynamic platform for integration across academia, industry, and government. UMLARC is not just a provider of infrastructure and programming; we are the architecture enabling systemic alignment where policy, mission need, and technical capability meet.
Our mission is to be the premier nonprofit advancing emerging and dual-use technology innovations, championing STEM education and business development, and fortifying strategic leadership in national security and technological resilience. UMLARC empowers innovators and decision-makers to drive their technologies from concept to transformative impact through robust programming, thought partnership, and trusted matchmaking.
